Job Summary:
The Network Specialist is responsible for the installation, monitoring, and maintenance of equipment and facilities that deliver services to customers. This includes DC and AC systems, IP and Ethernet transport, IP routing, Ethernet switching, GPON and xDSL subscriber access equipment, voice switching, call routing equipment, and OSS/BSS integration.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot network equipment, including routers, switches, transport equipment, DHCP servers, DNS servers, and voice switching equipment.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and decommission equipment and cabling efficiently and accurately.
  • Prepare for installations and upgrades by reviewing work orders, obtaining necessary equipment, supplies, and tools, and evaluating installation locations.
  • Identify, label, measure, terminate, and physically route cables that supply AC and/or DC power or transmit data.
  • Participate in on-call rotation, maintenance windows, and respond to emergency outages as needed, performing emergency repairs as required.
  • Assist in the installation, servicing, and removal of central office (CO) facilities.
  • Repair and maintain office power supply equipment, including rectifiers, generators, ringing machines, and distribution panels and fuses.
  • Test, maintain, and evaluate performance of customer lines, switching gear, trunks, and billing and traffic metering equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance of equipment and central offices according to the schedule established by the Network Operations Manager.
  • Establish, modify, or terminate service by tying cross-connections and coordinating with connecting companies for special circuits.
  • Conduct acceptance testing and related duties for manufacturer-installed CO equipment.
  • Evaluate the quality of toll, EAS, special circuits, and other carrier facilities.
  • Perform call screening and routing translation additions and changes as needed to accommodate network, feature, and trunking changes.
  • Comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies.
  • Process new installation service orders and service change orders promptly according to department guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate subscriber records in OSS/BSS and keep ancillary documentation updated.
  • Prepare quarterly reports on subscriber services for reconciliation purposes.
  • Conduct physical inventory of network equipment at the end of each quarter.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Experience:
  • An Associate’s degree or higher in telecommunications or electronics is preferred, or two years of related experience and/or training.
  • Computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Knowledge of transport systems like Calix C7, Calix E7, and Tellabs UMC1000.
  • Understanding of structured cabling and termination types using optics, fiber, and copper.
  • General knowledge of power systems, including inverters and fuses.
  • Familiarity with digital CO and remote switching equipment, test gear, and associated materials.
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet and TDM transport/switching protocols, as well as voice transport/switching protocols.
  • Understanding of DNS and DHCP server configuration and maintenance.
  • Ability to read and apply schematics, blueprints, and circuit diagrams to CO design.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and industry standards and specifications.
Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:
  • Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must be able to respond to on-call or emergency maintenance situations.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy.
  • Self-motivated with strong initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Normal visual acuity to consistently distinguish wire colors.
