Job Description

We are looking for an Appellate Attorney for our client in Southfield. You will be responsible for handling complex appellate litigation on behalf of the company, ensuring that legal positions are effectively presented and defended in state and federal appellate courts.

Position Details:
  • Salary: $100,000-$160,000
  • Hybrid – 1 day a week remote
  • Direct Hire Opportunity
  • Sign On Bonus
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Review trial court records, transcripts, and legal filings to identify issues for appeal and assess litigation exposure.
  • Draft high‑quality appellate briefs, motions, and legal memoranda that clearly articulate the company’s legal positions.
  • Present oral arguments before state and federal appellate courts as needed.
  • Provide legal guidance to claims professionals and trial counsel regarding appellate strategy, case evaluation, and legal precedent.
  • Monitor legal developments, emerging case law, and statutory changes affecting insurance litigation.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure consistent application of legal standards and risk‑management practices.
  • Oversee outside counsel handling appellate matters and ensure alignment with company objectives.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, case tracking, and reporting in accordance with corporate policies.

Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; active state bar license required.
  • Significant experience in appellate litigation, insurance defense, or complex civil litigation.
  • Exceptional legal writing, research, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong understanding of insurance law, civil procedure, and standards of review.
  • Ability to manage multiple appeals simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Detail‑oriented, strategic thinker with strong communication and collaboration abilities.
