Job Description

We are searching for an Attorney, Coverage Defense for our client in Southfield, MI. You will be responsible for managing and defending auto insurance coverage matters on behalf of the company, ensuring compliance with state laws, policy provisions, and internal guidelines.

Salary: $100,000-$130,000
Hybrid – 1 day a week remote

Key Responsibilities
  • Review, analyze, and evaluate coverage defense matters, including PIP, BI, UM, auto physical damage, rescission, and priority disputes.
  • Provide legal advice to claims professionals regarding coverage determinations, litigation strategy, statutory requirements, and risk assessment.
  • Represent the company in litigation, depositions, motion hearings, trials, and settlement negotiations related to coverage matters.
  • Draft and argue legal pleadings, motions (including motions in limine), discovery responses, and appellate filings as needed.
  • Take and defend depositions, including lay and expert witnesses.
  • Manage files from inception through resolution while maintaining accurate case files, documentation, and reporting.
  • Direct and collaborate with support staff on clerical and administrative matters related to lawsuit handling.
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments and outside vendors to resolve claims efficiently and effectively.
 
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an A.B.A.-accredited law school; active Michigan state bar license required.
  • 5+ years of experience handling first- and/or third-party auto insurance litigation and coverage matters from inception through trial.
  • Extensive knowledge of Michigan discovery rules, trial procedures, and substantive insurance coverage law.
  • Proven ability to independently manage a full caseload with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Strong litigation, negotiation, and advocacy skills, including trial experience through verdict.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Outlook, Westlaw, and working in a paperless electronic environment.
